A green oasis that is (now) free to all
Garden of the People
Another small park next to the Palace of St Michael and St George is the People's Garden, designed in 1833 and once the palace gardens. It was symbolically renamed after access became free for everybody in Corfu. From here, there is a wonderful view of the Old Fortress, the island of Vido (where the Serbian Mausoleum is) and Faliraki, which is a favourite of locals and visitors for sunset cocktails and a quick swim. There used to be an iron staircase (which you can still make out) for royals and nobles to descend to Faliraki beach. Today, there is an entrance from the garden to the Municipal Gallery of Corfu, which is housed in the palace. The gallery has a remarkable collection of works dating from the 16th to the 20th century, most of them representations of modern Greek painting.
