Corfu’s orchestral origins
The Philharmonic Society of Corfu
The origins of Corfu's philharmonic orchestras go back to the British Protectorate. In 1837, the English refused to accompany the procession of St Spyridon with their orchestra, and so the locals formed their own. Then, in 1840, a group of prominent local musicians, led by Nikolaos Halikiopoulos Mantzaros (considered the pioneer of the Ionian School of Music and composer of the national anthem) founded the Philharmonic Society of Corfu – also known as the Old Philharmonic. The society is housed in the building in front of you. Mantzaros' vision was to introduce everyone – regardless of gender, age, education or socio-economic status – to the pleasures of the so-called 'high' art of music. His aim was to cultivate a sophisticated Greek musical audience and to provide professional training.
