The Museum of the Philharmonic Society
The Philharmonic Society of Corfu
The Philharmonic Society building houses the Nikolaos Halikiopoulos Mantzaros Music Museum, which presents the history of the island’s oldest philharmonic orchestra. It focuses on the musical life of the Ionian Islands and Greece in the 19th century. You’ll learn more about Corfu’s Philharmonic Society, whose uniform colours are blue and red, representing the Ionian State. It laid the foundations for local musical education by offering free courses in theoretical and practical music, which still exist today. It was the first to perform the national anthem in 1864 and the Olympic anthem by Spyros Samaras at the inaugural modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. The museum contains rare instruments, schoolbooks, photographs, sheet music, audio documents and artwork. Admission is free.
