The church of Corfu’s patron saint
St Spyridon Church & Square
We are in the Heroes of the Cypriot Struggle Square, which is the official name. But locals call it the Plakada t’Agiou – or the Square of the Saint, as this is the location of the church named after Corfu's patron saint. The main entrance to the church is from the square but you can also enter from the back, from the parallel kantouni which (you guessed it) is called the St Spyridon, or simply the Kantouni of the Saint. The church is an important post-Byzantine monument as it’s decorated with religious works of great artists. It was built from 1589 to 1594, during the Venetian period, and was reconstructed in 1670. Its defining architectural feature is the bell tower, which was built in 1590 and is identical to the bell tower of St George of the Greeks in Venice.
