An introduction to Campiello
Venetian Well in Kremasti Square
At Kremasti Square, you reach Campiello, one of the oldest Venetian districts of Corfu. Built on a hill, Campiello is a maze of narrow streets, sometimes with steps and often leading to the sea. People don't say they live in Campiello. They refer to the church nearest their home, which forms a kind of a small neighbourhood square surrounded by elegant buildings. The name Campiello comes from the Italian word for small square, which makes sense in a neighbourhood that is essentially made up of lots of small squares. Kremasti is one such square, named after a 15th-16th century church and featuring a Venetian cistern dating to 1699 (the so-called Venetian Well). Take a look at the cistern, decorated with reliefs and coats of arms, floral motifs and inscriptions from the date it was built.
