Solomos in Corfu
Dionysios Solomos Museum
Solomos settled in Corfu at the end of 1828, seeking the peace of mind that would allow him to devote himself to his work. He was already an accomplished poet when he arrived in Corfu and his brilliant reputation meant that he was warmly welcomed by university professors and Corfiot scholars, many of whom later studied under him. It was in Corfu that his theories on language crystallised and it was here that he made his great contribution to the national awakening for the liberation struggle and to Greek literature. In so doing, he became an ambassador of the artistic movement of the Heptanese School of Literature as his work influenced literary creation in general.
