The Cathedral of Corfu
Metropolitan Church of Corfu
The church that dominates the top of the square that you are in is the Church of the Holy Virgin of Spilaiotissa, St Vlasios and St Theodora and it has been the Cathedral of Corfu since 1841. The Spilaiotissa part of its name comes from a cave that used to exist nearby, from which the wider area got its nameā¦ Spilia (or cave in Greek). Architecturally, it is a three-aisled basilica, which is rare for Ionian churches. It has Renaissance features, including two large arched windows and a decorated circular skylight. Inside, there are fragments of post-Byzantine frescoes and portable icons as well as works by important Cretan and Ionian painters. After the Fall of Constantinople, the relics of St Theodora of Augusta, a Byzantine empress and later a nun, were brought here in a silver shrine.
