The Tritons' Fountain was designed by the beloved Maltese sculptor Vincent Apap (1909-2003). Triton was an ancient Greek god of the sea who lived with his parents in a golden aquatic palace. He had the upper body of a human and a fish tail instead of legs. Apap designed three bronze tritons holding a large basin to represent Malta’s maritime glory. The fountain was never properly inaugurated but became casually operational in 1959 and has served as the focus of national celebrations ever since.
