The Achilleιο castle
The bay of Porto Cayo
The castle of Achilleio in Porto Cayo is the peninsula’s last fortification. It was built in the 16th century by the Ottomans in an attempt to acquire a military base and a supplying point for the Turkish fleet on its way to Crete and Cyprus. However, as the area was Venetians’ privileged field of actions, the establishment of the Ottomans in this region proved extremely difficult. In 1570, the Venetians, with the help of the local population, conquered the castle and destroyed it. It was repaired and reused by the Turks a few years later.
