Violence and fraud
Walking for peace
The elections of October 1961, when Lambrakis entered the Greek parliament, were condemned as “elections of violence and fraud.” The country was struggling with democratization issues following the widespread suppression of political and civil rights in the aftermath of the bloody civil war (1946-1949). The state seemed unable or unwilling to address issues arising from the unchecked illegal activities of an “invisible administration” that was financed by secret funds and promoted anti-constitutional and anti-democratic activities. Psychological and physical intimidation aimed at curbing the basic rights of thousands of communists or sympathizers who were considered irrecoverable “others.”
