Walking for peace
Lambrakis promoted the idea of a denuclearized zone in the Balkans, opposed the establishment of nuclear bases in Crete and took part in the Aldermaston March to London that was organized by a committee presided over by the philosopher Bertrand Russell. Lambrakis actually paid a visit to Lord Russell. The Greek Marathon Peace March, though, was the brainchild of a law student, Michael Peristerakis, and his peace group named the Bertrand Russell Youth Committee for Nuclear Disarmament. The group organized a highly publicized news conference, attended by 200 journalists, and a letter from Bertrand Russell himself, expressing his full support, was widely published.
