Crushing democracy
Walking for peace
The March was supposed to cover a 42 km route from the tomb of Marathon to the Acropolis but the state was determined to prevent the people who descended on Athens from all over Greece from participating in the event. On 21 April 1963, the day of the March, over 2,000 marchers were arrested and 300 injured as a result of state and para-state actions. Lambrakis enjoyed parliamentary immunity and he reached Marathon where he unfurled a black banner with the nuclear disarmament symbol and the word “Greece” emblazoned on it. Accompanied by three men, he tried to march to Athens but he was arrested near Rafina and was manhandled for three hours by the police.
