The origins of a name
Au Lapin Agile
In the heart of Montmartre, lies the rustic, ivy-covered Le Lapin Agile. Established in the 19th century, it began as a simple tavern named "Cabaret des Assassins" probably after the images of infamous murderers that adorned the walls. It was illustrator André Gill who gave the cabaret its new name, when he painted a sign depicting a witty rabbit leaping out of a pan. Regulars would then refer to the cabaret as "La Lapin a Gill(Gill’s Rabbit)” that with time came to be Au Lapin Agile(The Nimble Rabbit).
