Humble origins
Le Moulin de la Galette
The name "Le Moulin de la Galette" harkens back to the 17th century when this iconic Montmartre venue began its journey. Originally, it was a windmill—a "moulin" in French—used for grinding grains into flour, while the term "galette" referred to a type of rustic bread made from ground grain. It was bought by the Debray family in 1809 and was used for producing flour. Over time, as Montmartre evolved into a lively neighborhood, the windmill transitioned into a bustling gathering place, complete with a café and dancehall. The name, however, endured, serving as a nostalgic nod to its humble origins.
