The Old Retorts, which date back to 1862, are the oldest building of the Gasworks. The heart of the production was there, where the gas was created. In the Old Retorts, you will see a significant part of the Gasworks’ machinery as well as the metal railroad tracks of the railcars and the uniforms and tools of the workers. And, in case you wonder…what that smell is, the atmosphere in the retorts is similar to when the machines were frantically operating.
