The coal came from far away
Old Retorts (Stop 3-4)
The gas was primarily produced from coal, which had a long and adventurous journey before arriving to the Gasworks. It came from the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, South Africa, North America, Turkey and mainly from Cardiff in Wales by ship to the Piraeus Port. Then, train wagons were loaded up with coal finally arriving to Gazi. In the courtyard of the factory the coal was weighed, stored and then dragged through the railcars into the Old Retorts in order to feed their “voracious appetite”!
