Stolen Horns
Old Retorts (Stop 3-4)
Cornu in Latin means horn! If someone pays close attention to the Gasworks’ retorts, one can notice that their ending looked like horns and this is why the workers called them cornuta. The retorts were made of cast iron, an expensive metal which was high-temperature resistant. The same goes for the retorts’ lids, which are not saved today, mainly due to the fact that the majority of them were stolen from 1984, when the Gasworks ceased operation, to the beginning of the facilities’ restoration as the space was not properly guarded.
