Penalty Log
Old Retorts (Stop 5)
Have you argued with a colleague? Have you talked back to the supervisor or the doctor? Do you attend personal matters while at work? Have you neglected to fill the retorts with enough coal? Have you left them open for a long time? Have you forgotten to turn off the lights? Do you loiter when you should have shovelled the coke instead? Are you a coke extinguisher and work without your shoes on? You will have a penalty…you may lose 1-5 daily wages from your pay!
A very rare archival document is the penalty log of the old Gasworks that records the daily penalties of the workers, from 1932 to 1967, proving that the relationships between the employees and the factory’s management were modelled after the social standards of the time. Later on, some employees remember not only more educational penalties but also some supervisors who were softer and spared them.
