From the candles to gas

For centuries, the towns’ lighting was based on simple ways such as candles and oil lamps, until the invention of William Murdoch changed significantly the situation. This invention was undoubtedly the illuminating gas. In 1814, the streets of London were lit up and henceforth more major European cities used coal gas for their lighting, thus having a major contribution to the development of the urban environment.
