The perennial city-loser
Parents lose, children avenge
Poseidon could not catch a break when it came to city contests. Every time he tried to lay claim to one, another god or goddess came forth and took it from him. He lost Athens to Athena; Aegina to Zeus; Argos to Hera; Delphi to Apollo; and Naxos to Dionysus. In Corinth, he had to content himself with the city of Isthmia, while Helios (the Sun) claimed the far more impressive Acrocorinth. The best he could achieve was to share the city of Troezen with Athena, his perennial opponent. He was far more successful in his amorous quests, enjoying the affections of many beautiful goddesses, nymphs, and mortal queens. He is said to have fathered more than 100 children.
