The Niagara Scow
Mirador sur Three Sisters Island
When you reach the far shore of the third island, if you are keen-sighted, you may see the rusting hulk of the famous Niagara Scow in the distance. The wreck is lodged in the rapids between your position and the large stone building on the river’s Canadian side (the former Toronto Power Generating Station). The scow was a small barge used to dredge sandbanks from the Niagara River. In August 1918, the vessel got caught on a rock shoal, endangering the lives of the two crew members. No rescue boat could reach them, so the Coast Guard used a grappling gun from the power station's roof to send a lifeline to the barge. The men’s horrifying ordeal lasted seventeen hours. The ship was almost intact until October 2019, when it broke into several pieces during a storm. Soon, the remnants will be carried away, and the Niagara Scow will become a memory.
