The Old Library
The Old Library of Trinity College
The Library of Trinity College is the oldest and largest library in Ireland. It was designed by the Anglo-Irish military engineer and architect Thomas Burgh and was the most impressive building in Dublin when it was completed in 1732. The Long Room (named after its length, 65 metres or 213 feet) houses 200,000 of the oldest books and marble busts of notable scholars, philosophers, writers, and patrons of the university. The original design had a flat ceiling, but the shelves were full by the 1850s, so an upper gallery was added in 1860 to accommodate more books, thus making the room even more impressive.
