Hibernia and her friends
Dublin General Post Office
The General Post office was built in 1818 by the Anglo-Irish architect Francis Johnston in the Greek Revival Style. The entrance features six fluted Ionic columns. The triangular decorative surface over the columns once featured the royal arms (these were removed in the 1920s). The Irish sculptor John Smyth made the three sculptures above the pediment around 1814. They depict Mercury (the ancient Greek messenger of the gods) on the left, Fidelity on the right (holding a key with a hound at her feet), and Hibernia (the Classical Latin name for Ireland) holding a harp in the centre.
