The fortress walls
The fortress walls
Once you enter the archaeological site on your left side, you will encounter the fortress walls, extending to a length of about 400 meters to the northern and eastern sides. The fortification was built from local limestone blocks. The exact date of the construction is uncertain, but the wall, featuring 13 bastions of various sizes, was completed around 413 to 412 BC. The reason was to protect the area and the Athenian fleet from the Spartans during the Peloponnesian War. Thucydides informs us that the Athenians fortified the Cape during this war.
