Vernacular charm
Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum’s House
Get ready to explore the fabulous residence of Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum, the former ruler of Dubai. This structure is an iconic example of vernacular architecture, a style deeply rooted in traditional practices passed down through generations and in the use of local materials. It is constructed from clay, limestone, coral, and wood. The interior design revolves around a central courtyard, providing privacy, natural ventilation, and lighting. The architecture features horseshoe doors, Al Mashrabiya (decorative glass door screens), and arches, all reflecting Islamic influences. Inside, you'll find spaces designed with gender-specific areas, ensuring segregation according to Islamic tradition. As siblings reach puberty, they each get their own private bedroom, creating a maze of walls for privacy. But enough with all these walls, what about the openings? Let's find out!
