The legend of Kaldi
Coffee Museum
Let’s travel back to 9th-century Ethiopia. One day, Kaldi, a young goat herder, noticed his goats behaving unusually — frolicking, dancing, and jumping more energetically than ever before. A bit worried by this, Kaldi followed them around and discovered they were eating some red berries from a bush. Intrigued by their effect on the goats, he decided to try the berries himself. A wave of energy and alertness took over Kaldi! Not long after, he shared his secret with a local monk, who found the berries helped him stay awake and alert during long hours of evening prayers. Realising their potential, the monk then shared them with other monks, and the berries became a staple in the monastery. Soon enough the knowledge of the berries had spread to other monasteries and regions. Good news travels fast!
