The Sacred Way
The Sacred Way
Pass the Roman Agora and then take the stairs. There are many entrances to the sanctuary besides the path, visible today, which seems to have been the main road leading to the Temple of Apollo. The Sacred Way starts from this point, connecting the Agora with the sanctuary. On both sides of the Sacred Way, there were pedestals with offerings to the God. Most of them were statues, masterpieces of marble and bronze made by famous sculptors, trying to impress the visitors with the wealth and the glory of the various city-states. Most of them have been lost, but there are many descriptions of ancient visitors offering us lots of information about them. It has been estimated that there had been more than 100 statues there.
