The Treasury of the Athenians
The Treasury of the Athenians
Follow the stairs now and on your right you will see the best preserved treasury. This treasury represents the victory of the Athenians against the Persians in the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. It was built of parian marble and expensive material in Doric order. Important objects from Athenian victories were kept in the building. As decorative sculptures, the metopes of the northern and the western sides depicted the labors of Hercules. While on the most apparent southern and eastern sides there were the labors of Theseus, the Athenian hero. This is the only time that these two heroes are depicted together. In addition, the exterior is full of honorary inscriptions for the Athenian citizens. The Treasury of the Athenians was reconstructed in 1903-1906 by the French architect Joseph Replat and is considered the most well-known offering in the sanctuary.
