As you continue on your left, you will see some columns, the ruins of the Stoa of the Athenians. The Athenians built the portico in front of the polygonal wall after their victory at the naval battle of Salamis in 480 BC. In ionic order, it was 30 meters long by 4 meters wide with 7 columns of Pentelic marble. Inside they had stored the spoils from their enemies, the Persians. The monument's location was carefully chosen to ensure maximum visibility, thereby increasing its power of communicating its message to a much wider audience.
