Daedalic Apollo
Daedalic Apollo
This small figurine is one of the most important items in the museum. It is believed to be one of the earliest depictions of God Apollo and it dates back to the early archaic period. This type of art is called Daedalic because of the mythical figure of Daedalus. Daedalus, best known for being Icarus' father, was supposedly the first person who created human-like statues. He was a great mechanic and an artist. He is also linked with the island of Crete, where he built the labyrinth for King Minos. This type of art was also named after this mythical hero because the first statues that were ever found were in Crete. These statues and their technique are easily identified. The face has a triangular shape and the hair looks like a wig. The body structure of these statues has been described as the guideline for the Kouros statues that we find in the following centuries.
