The Golden and Ivory Statues of Apollo and Artemis
The Golden and Ivory Statues of Apollo and Artemis
These two statues were rich offerings to Apollo. They date back to the middle of the 5th century BC and it is believed that these statues were part of a complex consisting of three figures Apollo, Artemis and Leto. Some researchers support the idea that these offerings are linked with the Lydian King Croesus. The origin of the statues can be traced back to Corinthian workshops. Both figures have the typical archaic smile and the gold ornaments. The head of Artemis appears to have softer characteristics. The statues also have decorative reliefs made of ivory that depict Jason's expedition. There are also many images of mythical creatures.
