The sanctuary of Athena Pronaia
The sanctuary of Athena Pronaia
The Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia is located on the left side of the eastern road, just before reaching the main side of Delphi. The location is related to a cult of a prehistoric female deity, since multiple Mycenaean figurines were found there. They depicted a woman stretching her hands out. Later, in historic times, the sanctuary was dedicated to goddess Athena, goddess of wisdom and strategy. She was standing as a god before the sanctuary of Apollo, and for that reason, they gave her the name Pronaia, which in Greek means before the temple. Inside the wall of the sanctuary, there are some remains of buildings still intact today, which are a great example of ancient Greek architecture. For more information, please visit our website.
