The Treasuries
The Treasuries
Two smaller buildings classified as treasury are located at the center of the sanctuary. The bigger one to the east is built in Doric style, exactly after the Persian wars, 480-470 BC. The smaller treasury, which is also older from 530 BC, represents one of the best examples of ionic architecture from the archaic period. The two columns supporting the lintel were Ionic, but their capital was a very rare type which the archaeologists call Aeolic. They had a series of palm leaves bent outward. Very few remains of the embossed decoration have survived nowadays. The material used for the building was marble from the island of Paros, and it was constructed as an offering to goddess Athena by the city of Marseille, which was one of the ancient Greek colonies in a territory that is now France.
