The last tower house in Athens
Tower of General Church
At the corner of Epiharmou and Sholeiou Streets, you will see an unusual building. It is the only tower house of Ottoman times preserved in Athens. According to the sources, there were many such buildings in Ottoman Athens, as in other cities and in the countryside. Their appearance testifies to the need to resist to invasions, as attacks from groups of bandits, even in cities, were not uncommon. That is why, in the 18th century, the voivode of Athens, Hatzi Ali Hasheki, built a wall. The Hasheki wall was demolished after Independence, to allow connection with the new city that was founded next to the old one.
