The oldest house of Athens
Benizelos mansion
Shortly after the house of General Church, you will see the Benizelos mansion. The entrance is from Adrianou Street. The back is more interesting, as the facade is hidden behind a tall wall. It dates from the 16th and 17th centuries and is the only preserved mansion of Ottoman Athens. It is also the city’s oldest house. The time of its construction makes it a rare connecting link between Byzantine and post-Byzantine secular architecture, since very few houses dating before the 18th century remain throughout the country. Today it houses a museum devoted to Athens of Ottoman times.
