A neoclassical façade hiding a surprise
Bath of Kyrristou Street
Do not be fooled by the bath’s neoclassical façade. As with many buildings in Athens, it was added after Independence and hides a much older building. The addition of a neoclassical façade to buildings of Ottoman times was common, as the Greeks wanted to forget the recent past. They believed that the neoclassical "garment" helped to make the connection with antiquity. On the back you can see the glass skylights on the roof, revealing that this building is not what it seems. Now it is a museum worth visiting, as it is well restored and has a remarkable interior decoration.
