Hadrian’s Library. A royal gift
Monastiraki
Hadrian's Library was one of the Roman Emperor's gifts to the city he loved. As a great admirer of Greek civilization, Hadrian had a weakness for Athens. He finished the Temple of Olympian Zeus, built the gate with his name and much more. The library, built in 132 AD, was a cultural complex that included lecture halls and other rooms of unknown use. It was destroyed during the raid of the Herules in 267 AD. In Ottoman times, on its ruins was built the Voivodaliki, the voivode’s dwelling. Under King Otto, this became a barracks and then was demolished to make the library appear.
