A building with a strange history
Saint Eleousa and Assizes
In Aghias Eleoussis Street, in the area of Psyrri, there is a building with a strange history. Originally, it was a church of Saint Eleousa, built during in the Ottoman times, perhaps in the 17th century. After liberation, it was transformed into the Assizes, and now it is the Library of the Archdiocese of Athens. The transformation of the church into Assizes was made by Christian Hansen, a Danish architect of the 19th century, who also designed the University of Athens. The sanctuary of the church, with traces of murals, is still in the back of the building and you can see it if you enter (entrance free).
