A genius or a vandal?
Piazzetta Keith Haring
Born in the United States in 1958, Keith Haring demonstrated his talents very early on. Inspired by Walt Disney cartoons, Haring spent hours making drawings, assisted by his father, an engineer with the same passion for illustration. After quitting his studies in the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburg, he decided to move to New York. He continued his education at the School of Visual Arts and it was in the New York subway that he found his ultimate inspiration and trademark style. He noticed the empty spaces in advertising panels, which he started to fill out with black paper rectangular spots with naif dancing figures made out of white chalk. Soon, New Yorkers became great fans of those figures with strange heads and postures that brightened their commute. The city authorities noticed them too, arresting Haring on multiple occasions for vandalism.
