Changing hands
Church of San Frediano
The church is rich in sculptures, bas-reliefs and houses a twelfth-century crucifix. The frescoes are works by Aurelio Lomi, Domenico Passignano and Rutilio Manetti. The church was built in the mid-eleventh century and was originally dedicated to St Martin of Tours and St Frediano. Next to it, an annex that housed a hospital for the reception of pilgrims and the poor was erected. Since its consecration, it has changed many hands. From 1076 to 1561, it was run by the Camaldolese monks who built the adjoining monastery. The Camaldolese were replaced by the knights of Santo Stefano, who were its guardians until 1594. Then, from 1594 onwards the clerics of San Paolo took over until 1783. In 1784, the church became the seat of a parish, which incorporated the territory of the Madonna dei Galletti and the Saints Felice and Regolo. Since 1999, it has been a university church, entrusted to the Society of Jesus.
