Santo Spirito
Santo Spirito
The church of Santo Spirito, established by Augustinians in 1250, was rebuilt to Brunelleschi’s design after 1444. The inside is based on simple proportions and mathematical ratios, using multiples of 11. All very clever. The plan itself consists of a Latin cross made up of a square - replicated several times. Truly amazing! Within the church there is a crucifix created by Michelangelo, it was a special gift to the prior. As it was illegal to perform autopsies in Florence, unless you were a doctor, it was a clever move to win the prior’s favour. In fact, he became pivotal to Michelangelo’s unofficial anatomy classes - which obviously involved the dissection of dead bodies! Notice how the simple 18th century façade is left unfinished. Simple yet beautiful.
