Fall of the Titans
The Fréjus Tunnel monument
The Fréjus Tunnel monument is located in Piazza Statuto. Count Marcello Panissera di Veglio (1830-1886), a man with an impressive moustache, wished to honour the workers who built the Fréjus Tunnel, linking Italy and France. The monument was unveiled in 1879. The boulders forming the pyramid came from the tunnel. A winged genius (a spirit present in every person, place, or thing according to the Romans) overlooks the overthrown Titans. It symbolises the triumph of reason over primitive and hard-to-control forces.
