The mountain with the two names
Tymfristos
Mount Tymfristos or Velouchi, as either they used to call it, located in Evrytania and in particular north east of Karpenisi, belongs to the Pindus Mountain and is connected to Agrafa range. Its lowest altitude is 350 m., while its highest is 2.315m. (Velouchi peak). The position of Mount Tymfristos allows the coexistence of northern Balkan elements and Mediterranean ones. The flora of the mount consists of 1139 vascular plants. 739 taxa are common and widely spread, 111 are Balkan endemics, while 89 are Greek endemics and 25 are new records. The endemic species Abies cephalonica and Asperula oetaea are included in the IUCN list of threatened plants characterized as rare.The endemic species Cirsium heldreichii, Sesleria vaginalis, Anthemis spruneri and Veronica erinoides are protected by the Greek Law. Tymphristos is the home of Canis lupus, an animal that faces the danger of extinction, and of the birds of prey.
