The Green Oasis of Milan
Parco Sempione
Take a deep breath—welcome to Milan’s green oasis, Parco Sempione! Named after Corso Sempione, the emblematic road axis built in the Napoleonic era, the park traces its origins back to the 14th century “barcho ducale” created by the Visconti. Their successors, the Sforza, expanded the green area, and after populating it with deer, hares, and pheasants turned part of it into hunting ground. After their fall, the area was largely abandoned, serving mainly as a parade ground. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that the city transformed it into a public park. Inspired by the romantic English gardens of the era, architect Emilio Alemagna’s design created winding paths, serene ponds, and picturesque viewpoints. Today, it’s Milan’s most beloved green space—perfect for a stroll, a picnic, or simply a peaceful escape in the heart of the city.
