A Gateway to Peace
Arco della Pace
Take a look at this 25-meter-high triumphal arch! By now, you’ve surely noticed its three arched passageways, with the central one standing larger than the side ones. And perhaps you’ve spotted the four Corinthian columns flanking them—admire their elegant, flowery capitals. But can you see the two reclining figures above the columns? Along with their counterparts on the opposite side, they symbolize the four great rivers of the Lombardy-Venetia region: Po, Ticino, Adige, and Tagliamento. Now, let’s explore the top. At its center stands the Sestiga della Pace, a bronze sculpture of Peace riding a six-horse chariot. She holds an olive branch, the timeless symbol of peace, while four equestrian Victories flank her. This magnificent monument is called the Arco della Pace—the Arch of Peace. Ironically, Napoleon first commissioned it to celebrate victory in war!
