A place of Memory
The Monumental Cemetery
The Monumental Cemetery is a place of memory—a sanctuary where stories, legacies, and ideals are preserved, honored, and passed down through generations. The vision for a single, grand cemetery to replace Milan’s many scattered and unsanitary burial grounds took shape in 1837. Architect Carlo Maciachini took on the challenge in 1863, and though still unfinished, the cemetery opened its gates in 1866. Today, it spans 250,000 sq. meters and holds over 100,000 tombs. It features a central ossuary, a once-operational crematorium, a Jewish section, a non-Catholic section, and the grand Necropolis, where the city’s most prominent families rest. But first, let’s admire the Famedio, a monument dedicated to Milan’s most distinguished citizens. Ready to explore?
