An ambitious project
Piazza Gae Aulenti
Look at this magnificent circular piazza! If Milan’s Cathedral reigns over the city’s historic past, Piazza Gae Aulenti is the queen of its dazzling future. Designed by renowned Argentine architect César Pelli, this elevated square—rising six meters above street level—was created as part of the Porta Nuova Garibaldi urban regeneration project, transforming a once-abandoned industrial area into a hub of urban life. Its sleek design showcases three circular water fountains, enhanced by sculptural elements like the seamless, flowing ring of seating around them—you can actually take a moment to catch your breath if you’d like. The piazza also features four levels of shops, restaurants, and cafés, along with a parking garage that connects directly to Garibaldi Railway Station. But who was Gae Aulenti?
