The approach is definitely underwhelming for a sanctuary as famous as the Asclepieion. From the parking lot, you enter the archaeological site through the grill door at the parking lot. You go down a few stairs and follow the paved alley towards the (tiny) opening in the trees straight ahead and slightly to the left. The walk is short and delightful as the canopy of oleanders and olive trees protects you from the sun. At the end of the alley, you will find the ticket desk on your right (a light yellow building with green windows). Immediately to the left are the validation machines. Up to this point, the Asclepieion was shielded from your eyes. But now, past the machines, you suddenly see the sanctuary’s ground level. It seems cruel that a visitor (let alone an ailing human) has to ascend a gazillion stairs to see a divine doctor. It can’t be helped, so take a deep breath and prepare to climb. However, first we need to spend a few minutes near the steps you see in front of you to learn a few things about the sanctuary.
