Now let's climb the 23 stairs — consider it a warm-up; the real challenge is just ahead. This brings us to the first terrace, which looks massive and empty, aside from a bunch of arches at the far end and crumbling walls to the left. Ignore the crumbling walls (they are Roman bathing facilities, but you cannot enter the building) and proceed towards the arches. A question arises at this point. Are you pure enough to deserve an encounter with the great healer? No matter what you think, it wouldn’t hurt your chances to stop by the sanctuary’s springs on either side of the next set of stairs you see in front of you for a touch of ablution and a shower of information.
