It's time to climb the stairs. Thirty steps await patiently to torture you. Remember that all these steps are relatively modern reconstructions by the Italian archaeologists who restored many of the sanctuary’s features in the 1930s. You are now on the second terrace, which is packed with points of interest. Right in front of you, at the top of the stairs, is the altar. Did you remember to bring a cock for the god? If not, you might have to retrace your steps back down all those stairs. But don’t go just yet. Perhaps Asclepius is busy healing somebody elsewhere and not aware of your sacrilege. Take this opportunity to walk around the altar. If you circumnavigate the right pile of stones, you should eventually see a low pyramidal construction with a red-letter inscription saying HELLENISTIC ALTAR OF ASCLEPIOS.
